Centrally Manage Hierarchies for Analytics and BI

Hierarchy management is key to both reference data management and master data management. Product hierarchies, customer hierarchies and charts of accounts are examples of hierarchies used in both operational and analytical use cases.

Other hierarchies – such as market segmentations, customer groupings, and sales territories – may need to be managed outside operational systems that don’t accommodate these custom views.

Kalido MDM handles all styles of hierarchies – everything from simple rollups to ragged or unbalanced hierarchies – and includes an ability to support current vs. prior comparisons when hierarchies change. Our model-driven MDM technology easily enables multi-path and complex hierarchies, while providing data stewards with an intuitive, visual drag-and-drop interface for direct edits.

Kalido MDM Heirarchy Management

Key Hierarchy Management Features & Benefits

Robust, Multi-Domain Modeling

Kalido MDM business models easily support a variety of complex structures across multiple domains. Critical modeling capabilities for hierarchy management include native support for multiple hierarchies that reference the same base entities. Variable-depth or ragged hierarchies, multiple-parents and orphans are all supported as part of Kalido MDM’s business information modeling.

Managing Identifiers

Each level of a hierarchy may require multiple sets of unique identifiers. Kalido business models can manage multiple identifiers for each subject. An identifier can be either primary or alternate, optional or mandatory. Model-driven validation quickly flags any duplicates or related gaps in business rules based any of the available keys.  Then, similar to any other business rule validation errors in Kalido MDM, these invalid subjects are moved into a “working context” for subsequent review and resolution.

Mapping

Kalido business information models facilitate quick and efficient mapping between entities both within and across domains. Global to local, external to internal, specific to general are quickly defined and implemented with virtually no disruption to existing elements. Base entities can also map to any level within either variable or fixed-depth hierarchies. Changes are automatically captured through both Kalido MDM’s out-of-the-box time variance support and through audit history.

Hierarchy visualization

Kalido MDM offers a hierarchy browser that provides intuitive and straight-forward navigation across hierarchies. Users can quickly walk through multiple drill-down paths, compare existing and new hierarchies, update through drag-and-drop, list pending changes and detect possible orphans. In addition to effective visualization, hierarchy updates can easily be assigned to a worklist that bundles all related changes together in the Kalido MDM workflow.

Versioning and Time Variance

With Kalido MDM, the creation of new hierarchies plus any changes to existing hierarchies are automatically captured and stored across time. With this functionality, end users can review changes across time in one screen or even change history by inserting changes into an existing time sequence. Users can quickly retrieve any subject based on current state, how any hierarchy existed at a point in time, or a combination of the two when looking across categories.

Workflow

Consistent with Kalido MDM’s user interface and business information models, a powerful and robust workflow enables both efficiencies and proper governance around business process. Workflow manages events, workflow states and state transitions. Configurable worklists can be used to tie multiple subjects together and managed forward as a group objects within the workflow. Workflows can also include change requests and raised issues from the Kalido MDM Consumer user interface which is designed for read-only display of published master data.

Governance

A robust, customizable business information model, workflow and set of validation rules provides just the right amount of control over the business process. Complete audit history captures what changes were made by whom and at what time. Master data subjects are also managed in either working or published context to provide absolute control over both timing and content as to which changes can be made publicly available. In addition to role-based access, MDM model-based security can also be implemented to control which users can view, add or update categories or subjects.

Forrester Wave: Master Data Management

Delivering clean, accurate, and consistent master data
is critical for efficient business processes.

But it isn’t enough to simply get clean data – you need to keep it clean, too. And the best way to keep data clean is to proactively engage the people who know the most about the data in the process.

Forrester, a leading independent technology and market research company, has cited Kalido MDM as a “Strong Performer” in The Forrester Wave™: Master Data Management Solutions, Q1 2016. According to the Forrester Wave report author, Senior Analyst Michele Goetz, “The Kalido MDM tool makes master data management (MDM) easy for data stewards and subject matter experts (SME).”
